Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the remote Karamoja region in northeastern Uganda. There are a few hospitals near the park, but they are limited and far.
Below are some of the hospitals close to Kidepo:
Kaabong Hospital
Kaabong Hospital is a government hospital located in Kaabong town, about 100 km from Kidepo Valley National Park. It is the nearest hospital to the park. It provides services such as emergency care and general medical treatment.
Anyone can visit this hospital, no matter their income, because it is public. It is more convenient for visitors traveling through Kaabong.
Moroto Regional Referral Hospital
This hospital is located in Moroto town, about 200 km from Kidepo Valley National Park. It has more equipment and better facilities than Kaabong Hospital. However, it is farther from the park, which can be a challenge during emergencies. It is one of the main referral hospitals in northern Uganda and offers many medical services.
St. Joseph’s Hospital Kitgum
St. Joseph’s Hospital is a private, non-profit hospital in Kitgum town, northeastern Uganda. It serves people from Kitgum and nearby districts like Agago, Abim, and Pader.
The hospital provides general health care, surgery, and maternity services.
St. Pius Kidepo Health Centre III
St. Pius Kidepo Health Centre III is found in Moroto. It is a small health centre that mainly serves outpatients. It offers basic services like first aid, treatment for minor injuries, and consultations. It does not have equipment for serious health problems.
Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo
This hospital is in Agago District and is more suitable for people coming from the south of Kidepo. It is a bit far from the park but provides good medical care and supports the community.
Because Kidepo is far from major towns, it is important to prepare well before visiting. Pack a first aid kit, insect repellents, and sleep under treated mosquito nets. Make sure you are vaccinated before travel.
Tourists should also have emergency contact numbers and health insurance. Serious medical cases may need to be transferred to bigger hospitals in Kampala.
Kidepo Valley National Park has very few hospitals nearby because of its remote location. Always take care of your health and stay hydrated while visiting.
