Crime Rate in Kidepo – Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the remote area of Karenga, in the Karamoja region of North Eastern Uganda. It borders South Sudan to the northwest and Kenya about 5 km to the east.
This park is a safe place to visit as you enjoy your getaway from home, though a few crimes still happen.
Theft
Thefts often happen in the urban centers. This usually occurs in the towns of Lokitalaik, Karenga, and Kaabong because many people live there.
Some locals may try to steal other people’s belongings. Theft can also occur at bus stations and park gates.
Visitors should be careful in crowded places. Important documents like passports should be left safely locked at your lodge.
Avoid moving around late at night in nearby towns. Carry only small amounts of money that will last you for the day.
Robbery
Because the area is remote, there are reports of highway robbery. The Moroto-Kaabong-Kidepo route and the roads near the South Sudan border are not safe, especially at night.
Some checkpoints may not be official, so tourists should check with their park guides before stopping.
The Lorengedwat route is also unsafe at night due to few vehicles and people. It is best to travel during the day and in groups for safety.
Cattle Rustling
Cattle rustling has gone down in Kidepo Valley National Park, but some cases still happen. This affects tourism since visitors may worry about their safety.
The Karamojong, Toposa, and Pokot people from South Sudan and Kenya take part in cattle rustling. For them, cattle means wealth, social status, and bride price.
The Local Defence Unit has been deployed to stop cattle rustling and help keep your safari safe.
Poaching
Poaching is another crime in Kidepo Valley National Park. Poachers target lions, leopards, and elephants for their skins, hides, horns, and hooves.
Armed poachers are a danger to wildlife and people, especially park rangers on duty.
The government of Uganda, through the Uganda Police Force, is working hard to reduce these crimes. There are police stations near the park gates to keep visitors safe and patrols in the nearby park areas.
