Visit Kidepo in December – Uganda Safari Weather Guide

Kidepo in December

December marks the end of the dry season in Kidepo. The days are hot, with temperatures between 28–35°C, but it gets cool at night, ranging from 17–20°C. There is almost no rainfall, and the weather is good for all outdoor activities.

This is a peak season in Kidepo, with many tourists visiting during the month. It is important to book and confirm your accommodation early, as lodges may get full.

The heat during the day, especially around midday, can be intense. Pack light clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a safari hat to stay comfortable. Always carry bottled water to keep hydrated.

The roads to Kidepo are rough, and the drive takes about 10–13 hours, covering around 700 kilometers. A strong 4-wheel drive safari vehicle is recommended. If you prefer to fly, you can book a flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to the park. Book early due to high demand during this season.

Animals are easy to see in December because the vegetation is thin. Most animals gather near water sources, especially in the Narus Valley. Game drives are the best way to see them, and you may spot both mammals and birds.

Some of the animals you may see include antelopes, lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, and elephants. Carry binoculars to see animals that are far away. It’s also good to bring snacks and water, as game drives can last 2–3 hours.

December is also a good month for birdwatching. Many birds, including migratory and native species, are present. Bird lovers can enjoy watching birds like the Karamoja apalis, Abyssinian roller, kori bustard, ostriches, and others.

There are fewer mosquitoes this month since many seasonal rivers are dry. This lowers the risk of malaria, but you should still use insect repellent and sleep under a treated mosquito net.

The skies are clear, which makes it a good time for photography. Don’t miss other activities in the park like visiting Mountain Morungole (home of the IK people), Lomej Hills, Kidepo Valley, Kanangorok Hot Springs, and Lonyili Mountain.

December is a great month to visit Kidepo. Wildlife is easy to spot, and the weather is good for all activities in the park.
