Backpacking in Kidepo National Park - Wildlife, Culture & Tips

Backpacking in Kidepo is a good way to explore wildlife like the big four, wide grasslands, and views of the mountains. Meeting local people like the Karamojong and IK, and going for nature walks, are also activities you should try.

The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, from September to March. The roads are easier to use, which makes nature walks better, and animals are easier to see.

You can reach the park by road or air. If you choose to travel by road, you can go through Gulu, Lira, or Moroto. Depending on the route, the trip takes about 10 to 13 hours. It is a good idea to break the journey into two parts by staying overnight at Boma Inn before continuing the next day. This helps you rest because the journey is long and it is not safe to travel at night.

Pack light clothes and some long-sleeved shirts, hiking boots, insect repellent, a solar charger, sunglasses, a headlamp, bottled water, sunscreen, and a small first aid kit. Avoid moving very early in the morning or late at night.

There are many places to stay in the park. Apoka Rest Camp is a budget-friendly option, and you can even see lions at the Apoka water hole.

You can also carry a sleeping bag or tent and a small blanket to sleep in at night.

Follow park rules, especially no littering, because there are penalties. Always use dustbins provided or keep your litter in your backpack until you find one. Use the marked paths when hiking.

You can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Apoka Rest Camp restaurant inside the park. Drinks are also available at the Apoka Tourism Centre canteen.

If you want to cook your own food, you can buy it from nearby towns like Kitgum or bring it with you. Foods like rice and posho are good choices. You will need a stove or can cook over a campfire.

Backpacking in Kidepo can be done even on a budget. Do not miss the chance to see the beautiful land, learn about the cultures, and spot rare animals.

Kidepo National Park is a special place worth visiting.
