Narus Valley in Kidepo – Wildlife, Birds & Game Drives

Narus Valley - Top Wildlife Viewing Spot in Kidepo

Narus Valley is a well-known wildlife area in Kidepo Valley National Park, located in the Karamoja sub-region of northeastern Uganda. The word Narus means “marshy ground” in the Karamojong language.

The valley holds water even during the dry season. It gets a steady water supply from the Narus River, which makes it a permanent water source all year round. Many animals gather here to drink water, especially during the dry months.

Narus Valley is made up of open Savannah grasslands, wetlands, and acacia trees. It has many animals and plants. The valley is easy to reach through the park’s main gates, Nataba and Lokumoit.

This area is good for seeing animals such as lions, zebras, giraffes, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, antelopes, greater and lesser kudus, bushbucks, oribis, aardwolves, spotted hyenas, and Jackson’s hartebeest. Many of these animals can be seen on morning or evening game drives, especially during the dry season.

Bird watching is another activity you can enjoy in Narus Valley. Kidepo has more than 475 bird species. Some of the birds you may see include ostriches, secretary birds, kori bustards, Abyssinian rollers, Karamoja apalis, and black-breasted barbets. This is a good place for bird lovers to see birds in the open plains.

During the wet season, from April to August, the vegetation becomes green and thick. Animals spread out and are harder to find, but park rangers can help locate them. The green landscape is good for photography, and migratory birds come to Kidepo during this time, which makes it a nice season for bird watching.

Guided nature walks are common in Narus Valley because the area is open and easy to walk through. These walks give you a closer view of the plants and animals. You should wear comfortable boots, light clothes, and carry binoculars, drinking water, and a camera.

At the edge of Narus Valley is Mount Morungole, where the IK people live. Tourists can take a walking safari with a park ranger to visit the area and learn about the IK culture. Narus Valley is also a good place to enjoy a sunset.

Narus Valley is not just a valley but a home for many animal and bird species that are part of Kidepo Valley National Park.
