Visit Kidepo in February – Uganda Safari Weather Guide

Kidepo in February

In February, Kidepo is dry and it is the second last month of the dry season. The sun becomes very hot in the afternoon due to high daytime temperatures, but it cools down at night.

The plants start to dry up during this month, although a little rain may still fall. Because the grass is short and thin, it is easier for visitors to see animals, especially around water sources like the Narus Valley.

You can expect to see animals such as elephants, zebras, cheetahs, and buffaloes during game drives. These drives can take place early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler.

Since February is very hot, carry bottled water to stay hydrated. You should also pack sunglasses, a safari hat, light clothing, and sunscreen. Daytime temperatures can rise up to 35°C.

Nature walks are also good during this month, as the paths are dry and easy to walk. You can enjoy views of the Lomej Mountains and Apoka camp. These walks can be done at any time of the day.

The roads are dusty and not in good condition, so it is best to use a 4-wheel drive safari vehicle. From Kampala, the journey to Kidepo is about 700 kilometers and takes between 10 to 13 hours by road.

Birdwatchers will enjoy the park in February, as there are more than 475 bird species, including secretary birds, ostriches, Karamoja apalis, Abyssinian rollers, and many migratory birds. Bring binoculars to help you see birds clearly in the short grasslands.

February is also a good time to visit the nearby communities like the Karamojong and IK tribes. Learning about their customs and way of life is a unique experience.

At night, temperatures drop to about 20°C. Make sure to pack long-sleeved clothes, insect repellent, and sleep under a treated mosquito net.

The bright sunlight makes it a good time for photography. You can take nice pictures of the animals and the open landscapes.

Book your accommodation early, as many tourists visit the park in February. There are many places to stay for different types of visitors.

Kidepo Valley National Park in February gives you clear views of dry golden grasslands and many chances to see animals in the Narus Valley and near the borassus palm trees of Kidepo Valley.
