Kidepo Valley National Park is full of green tropical plants in April. This month marks the start of the wet season, which lasts until August. The weather is cooler, and there is less sunshine because the park is in a semi-arid area.
The roads to Kidepo become muddy and hard to pass during this time. It is best to use a 4-wheel drive safari vehicle to reach the park. You can also choose to fly in, which is a faster and easier option.
April is a good month for bird lovers. Many migratory birds can be seen in the park. Some animals may hide during the rain, but you can still spot them.
Guided game drives help you see animals such as elephants, buffaloes, mountain reedbucks, greater kudu, lesser kudu, lions, Guenther’s dik-dik, aardwolves, and leopards. The guides know where animals move during the rains. Most animals go to higher ground and spread out, so a ranger is helpful in finding them.
The green plants and hills make a nice background for photography. Your pictures will look bright and full of life with animals and nature in the background.
It is important to know that malaria risk is high in April. Mosquitoes that spread malaria breed in standing water during this month. Pack insect repellent, long-sleeved clothes, a first aid kit with malaria test kits, and always sleep under a treated mosquito net at the lodge.
You can also enjoy guided nature walks and take time to look at the green landscape. You can see birds, animals, and plants along the way. Even though the paths may be muddy, a ranger can help guide you safely.
Do not leave Kidepo without meeting the local people. These are the Karamojong and the IK tribes who have kept their culture for many years. Their way of life, beliefs, and traditions are interesting to learn about.
Even though it may be harder to see animals in April, guided game drives and nature walks still give you a good chance to find them and enjoy your visit to the park.
