Cheetahs in Kidepo

Kidepo Valley National Park in North Eastern Uganda is home to Uganda’s cheetahs. These animals belong to the cat family, and about 20 of them live in the park.

You can see cheetahs any time of the year, but they are rare. To spot them, you should go on a game drive early in the morning or late in the evening, just before sunrise or after sunset when the temperatures are cooler.

Cheetahs are found in the open grasslands, the savannah of Narus Valley, and desert-like palm areas. They are the fastest land animals in the world, reaching speeds of up to 70 km per hour, which helps them hunt in the grasslands.

Although cheetahs and leopards look alike, they are very different.

Cheetahs have long legs and long tails, small round black spots, semi-retractable claws, and black marks that run from the corners of their eyes to their nose. They have small heads and thin bodies, making them vulnerable. This makes them easy targets for other carnivores, diseases, and poachers.

Despite their speed, cheetahs are not strong fighters. Lions often steal their prey. Cheetahs are carnivores and usually eat antelopes, impalas, and gazelles. Female cheetahs prefer to be alone, while males tend to be more social.

A female cheetah’s pregnancy lasts 90 to 100 days, and she gives birth to 2 to 4 cubs. The cubs stop nursing at four months and then live on their own.

Cheetahs live for about 10 to 12 years in the wild, sometimes longer. Their skins are used by some royal families in Africa as special garments because they look elegant.

In Kidepo, you can spot cheetahs mainly in Narus Valley because of its grasslands. They are rare in Kidepo Valley itself but can also be found near Apoka Tourism Centre with the help of park rangers. Cheetahs are almost genetically identical and they purr like domestic cats.

Cheetahs are amazing animals to see. Because their numbers in the park are low, conservation programs are in place to protect them from poaching.

Visit Kidepo Valley National Park for a rare and exciting chance to see cheetahs in this remote part of Uganda. It will be an experience you will never forget.
