  • Kidepo Valley National Park is located in the remote Karenga area of Karamoja district in North Eastern Uganda.
  • It was first set up as a game reserve in 1958 by the British colonialists to protect wild animals.
  • In 1962, the same year Uganda gained independence, Kidepo was declared a national park.
  • The park covers 1,442 square kilometres and lies between 914 meters and 2,750 meters above sea level. It has vast savannahs and rough terrain.
  • The best time to visit is during the dry season, from September to March, when wildlife viewing is easier.
  • Kidepo is home to over 77 mammal species, 470 bird species, and 692 plant species.
  • The climate is semi-arid, so light clothes are recommended when visiting.
  • You can reach the park by:
  • Air: chartered flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airstrip to Apoka airstrip (about two hours).
  • Road: a 10 to 13-hour drive from Kampala, depending on the route.
  • Animals unique to Kidepo include cheetahs, greater and lesser kudu, striped hyenas, klipspringers, caracals, and Guether’s dik-dik.
  • Activities include game drives, guided nature walks, bird watching, and visits to the Karamojong and IK local communities.
  • Special birds found only here include the ostrich, pygmy falcon, and Karamoja apalis.
