Uganda Travel Tips & Advice for Kidepo National Park

Kidepo travel advice and tips

Kidepo Valley National Park Advice and Tips – Getting to the park can be either by air or road. Air transport is the fastest and easiest, but it is more expensive. Road transport is more affordable and is used through the eastern routes that pass through the Karamoja region.

You can use the Kampala–Karuma–Gulu–Kitgum–Kidepo route, which takes about 10 hours. Other options include the Kampala–Mbale–Nakapiripirit–Moroto–Kotido–Kaabong–Kidepo route, which takes about 12 hours, or the Kampala–Mbale–Soroti–Kotido–Kaabong–Kidepo route, which takes about 13 hours.

If you are coming from Kampala by road, you can split the journey into two days. Spend a night at Boma Inn or Church Hill Courts and continue to the park the next day.

If you choose air transport, scheduled domestic flights are available with Aerolink Uganda. These fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airstrip to Kidepo. Departure is at 12:30 pm, and arrival at either Apoka or Lomej airstrip is at 2:45 pm. The return flight from Kidepo leaves at 3:00 pm and reaches Entebbe or Kajjansi at 4:30 pm.

Apoka airstrip is better because it is located inside the park. Lomej airstrip is 3 kilometers south of the park headquarters. Flights operate only on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. A one-way ticket costs 420 USD per person, and a return ticket costs 700 USD per person.

There are several places to stay while at the park, including luxury, mid-range, and budget options. These include Apoka Safari Lodge, Kidepo Savannah Lodge, Nga’Moru Wilderness Camp, Apoka Rest Camp, Zebra’s Safari Lodge, Karatunga Safari Camp, Mara Safari Lodge, Adele Safari Lodge, and others. It is better to stay in or near the park. Make sure to confirm your booking before you travel.

Kidepo Valley National Park is home to the Karamojong and IK people, who have unique cultures. You can visit their villages and take part in community walks.

Bird watching is a popular activity. You can see colorful birds in Narus Valley, Kidepo Valley, and around Apoka Rest Camp. Game drives are also a must-do activity to see many animals, including some of the Big Five. Always follow the park rules for your safety and to protect the wildlife.

Nature walks and hikes in Narus Valley are also available. Walking through the open grasslands allows you to connect with nature in a special way.

To enjoy your visit, carry a pair of binoculars to see animals from far, wear light clothes for the hot weather, bring a camera with extra batteries, hiking boots for walking, some snacks, drinking water, a backpack, insect repellent, and sun protection like sunglasses, a cap, and sunscreen.
