Uganda Motorcycle Tours to Kidepo – Routes, Wildlife & Tips

Motorcycle Tours to Kidepo

Motorcycle tours to Kidepo offer a chance to explore the park’s wide landscapes and see its many animals. You can enjoy game drives, bird watching with over 475 bird species, nature walks, and cultural visits to the Karamojong and IK people.

The entry fee for motorcycles is 30 USD for foreign residents and 10,000 UGX for East African citizens. These fees are paid at all park gates and are collected by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from September to March, when the roads are dry and easier to use. Animals are also easier to see during this time because they gather around water sources.

There are several routes you can take by motorcycle to reach the park. The first is the Kampala-Karuma-Gulu-Kitgum-Kidepo route, which takes about 10 hours. The second is the Kampala-Karuma-Lira-Kotido-Kaabong-Kidepo route, which takes about 12 hours. The third is the Kampala-Mbale-Soroti-Moroto-Kotido-Kaabong-Kidepo route, which also takes about 12 hours.

Note that the roads in Karamoja are rough and dusty because the area is remote. On the bright side, the views of Mountain Moroto, the Kanangorok Hot Springs, and Karamojong villages are worth seeing.

It is also possible to ride a motorcycle from another park, like Murchison Falls National Park, to Kidepo. This route is shorter and mostly on tarmac, although some parts are dusty.

Make sure to start with a full tank, as fuel stations are very few in Kidepo. You can find fuel in towns like Kitgum, Moroto, and Gulu.

Since the roads are rough, motorcycles like Bajaj or Honda are better suited. Bring a helmet for your safety, sunglasses to protect from dust and sun, spare parts, and a toolbox.

Don’t forget your motorcycle permit and license. Also carry extra fuel, light clothes, insect repellent, and sunscreen. It is best to start the ride early in the morning. If you pass through Gulu, you can spend the night at Boma Inn.

Avoid riding at night because the roads are bad and not safe. You can also stop by the River Nile during the day to rest and enjoy the view.

With proper planning and care, it is possible to reach Kidepo Valley National Park safely from Kampala by motorcycle.
