Biodiversity, Ecosystem, and Geography of Kidepo – Kidepo Valley National Park is located in North Eastern Uganda, in the Karamoja region of Kabong district. It is bordered by South Sudan to the northwest and Kenya about 5 kilometers to the east.
The park covers an area of 1,442 square kilometers. Its elevation ranges from 914 meters to 2,750 meters above sea level. It is the most isolated park in Uganda and has rough, rugged land. By road, it is about 700 kilometers from Kampala to the park.
Mountain Morungole, which stands at 2,750 meters and is a few kilometers northeast of Apoka, is home to the smallest tribe in Uganda, known as the IK people.
The best time to visit the park is during the dry season from September to March to have the best chance of seeing the wildlife.
The park is home to over 77 mammal species, about 475 bird species, and 692 plant species.
Mammals found only in this park include cheetahs, klipspringers, striped hyenas, caracals, greater and lesser kudus, and Guenther’s dik-dik. These animals can be seen in the short savannah grasslands of Narus Valley.
The valley also has large herds of elephants, zebras, and antelopes that graze in the open grasslands. Many animals gather in Narus Valley because it has water all year round, supplied by the Narus River.
The park has plenty of plants, including savannah woodlands, grey-haired acacia, shrubs, and trees. Animals like leopards, lions, buffaloes, waterbucks, side-striped jackals, and Jackson’s hartebeest roam the open plains.
The thorny trees of Kidepo Valley are home to many birds such as the rose-ringed parakeet, pygmy falcon, and chestnut sparrow. The valley also has white sand areas where you can find elands and ostriches.
The large savannah grasslands include grasses like Panicum, Chloris, Setaria, and Themeda plus acacia trees. Some birds found only in Kidepo are the Karamoja Apalis, black-breasted barbet, and the ostrich.
More than 58 unique bird species live in the wide grasslands. Birds like the slate-colored boubou, white-bellied go-away bird, and long-crested eagle are among them.
A visit to Kidepo Valley National Park is unforgettable. It offers adventure, close contact with nature, and a chance to learn about the African cultures of the Karamojong and IK people.
