Using Drones in Kidepo National Park – Rules & Info

Using drones in Kidepo

Using Drones in Kidepo Valley National Park – Kidepo Valley National Park is in the Karamoja region of North Eastern Uganda. It borders South Sudan to the northwest and is about 5 km from Kenya to the east.

The park covers an area of 1,442 square kilometers. The best time to visit is between September and March. It is home to over 77 mammals and 470 bird species. The area is mostly dry and semi-arid.

Tourists are not allowed to use drones in Kidepo Valley National Park because it is illegal.

The park puts the safety of wildlife first. Drones are noisy and can disturb the animals. Also, drones may hurt animals if they fall while being used.

Even though visitors cannot use drones, the Uganda Wildlife Authority started using drones in 2021 to help protect the park.

Drones help game rangers by warning them when animals move close to nearby communities.

They also help reduce poaching in the park.

Drones have helped lower the number of wildfires.

Conflicts between wildlife and people have also decreased because of drone use.

Drones are used to take aerial photos of the park. These photos show wildlife and the landscape to help promote tourism in Kidepo Valley National Park.

For these reasons, visitors cannot use drones in the park to protect and manage the animals.

However, you can bring a camera with extra batteries to capture great memories during your visit.
