Mount Morungole Uganda – Hiking, Birds & IK Culture

Mount Morungole

Mount Morungole is home to the IK people, a small indigenous group that lives on its slopes. The mountain stands at 2,749 meters above sea level and is located in the southeast of Kidepo Valley National Park, in northeastern Uganda, near the border with South Sudan.

The best time to visit Mount Morungole is between September and March, during the dry season when the paths are easier to follow. Hiking is one of the main activities here. It gives visitors a chance to explore the IK culture and learn about their way of life. The IK were once part of the Karamoja sub-region but were forced to settle on the mountain after being displaced by the Karamojong.

The mountain is surrounded by montane forests and Savannah grasslands, which are home to small mammals and butterflies. The butterflies help the plants by pollinating flowers as they search for nectar.

Mount Morungole is also home to many bird species such as the red and yellow barbet, Jackson’s hornbill, purple grenadier, chestnut weaver, white-bellied go-away-bird, Abyssinian scimitarbill, red-throated bee-eater, and golden pipit. It is a good place for bird watching. Visitors should carry binoculars to see small and distant birds more clearly.

The temperatures on Mount Morungole are cooler than in most parts of the park. During the hotter months, animals move toward the mountain to escape the strong heat in Kidepo and nearby areas. Streams from Mount Morungole feed the Narus and Kidepo rivers during the rainy season. These rivers are important, especially the Narus River, which supports wildlife in the Narus Valley during the dry season.

The mountain affects the weather in Kidepo Valley National Park. Because of its height and forests, the area around it stays cooler. This helps spread wildlife across the park as animals move away from the heat.

While hiking on Mount Morungole, you may see animals like warthogs, side-striped jackals, and hartebeests. There are no game drives, but with help from a trained guide, you might spot some of these animals during your walk.

Mount Morungole is a peaceful place rich in nature, culture, and wildlife. It is a good hiking spot that connects people with the natural world.
