Kidepo Valley National Park is home to over 475 bird species, 77 mammal species, and beautiful landscapes. It is located in Karenga, Karamoja region in North Eastern Uganda. The park borders South Sudan to the northwest and is about 5 km from Kenya to the east.
Trophy hunting means hunting wild animals and keeping parts of them as trophies. This is not allowed in Kidepo Valley National Park because the park focuses on protecting wildlife.
In Kidepo, killing an animal by accident is also punished. Poaching is illegal and can lead to arrest.
However, trophy hunting is allowed in some other parks like Lake Mburo National Park and Kabwoya Kaiso-Tonya game management area near Lake Albert. In these places, people can hunt buffaloes and small antelopes.
Kidepo Valley National Park focuses on wildlife safaris. You can see animals like the big four while on game drives. These drives can happen early in the morning or in the evening. Other animals you may see include zebras, cheetahs, and giraffes.
Bird watching is also popular in the park. There are over 475 bird species including migratory birds, ostriches, Karamoja apalis, and secretary birds. Bring binoculars for a better experience.
Instead of trophy hunting, you can enjoy the rich culture of the Karamojong people. They have kept their traditions despite changes around them.
You can visit their homesteads called manyattas, learn about their way of dressing, and see their lifestyle. The culture of the IK people is also interesting, and the views from their home at Mount Morungole are beautiful.
Guided nature walks are a good way to explore Kidepo. You will hear birds singing and animals as you walk through Narus Valley and the mountain ranges.
Do not miss Kanangorok hot springs, the wide sandy Kidepo Valley, and Namumukweny Valley, which is a good place for hiking.
Trophy hunting is not allowed in Kidepo Valley National Park, but there are many other activities to enjoy.
